I hunted 3 sites this past week hoping at least one of them might produce some decent finds … wrong! Site #1 was a WW II period park that I have been hunting on and off now for the past 2 months. This is where I found the 1964 Silver Dime. I spent a lot of time digging pennies here hoping to find silver and only found one. Site #2 was an old Boy Scouts camp / picnic grove where I found … yup more pennies! Site #3 was an old log cabin / stone chimney site in the woods. This is where I found the 1931 Dog Tag, the old axe head, the heavy brass ‘whatsit’ and set of car keys with a 1999 ‘DriveSafe / War Amps of Canada Tag. You can still see where the logs were set into the top of the chimney on this one. I did some detecting around the chimney area, but it's so heavily overgrown I found very little. I figure I'll come back again in the spring.
“The War Amps is a Canadian registered nonprofit organization established in 1918 to meet the needs of war amputees. The War Amps is funded solely through public support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service and does not receive government grants. Beginning in 1946 war amputees were given work by producing key tags. In 1972, this program began to serve year-round employment for disabled staff. If a pair of keys are found with a War Amps tag, giving them to either police or the postal service will allow the keys to come back to their rightful owners. War Amps reports that the key service has returned more than a million lost keys. The charity provides financial and advisory services to those who have lost a limb or total eyesight in military service during war and to provide similar services to Canadians who have undergone amputations. Today, the Association continues to serve them, and all Canadian amputees, including children. The Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program provides financial assistance for artificial limbs, regional seminars, peer support and so much more.”
I've sent an email to the War Amps offering to mail the keys back to the person who lost them back in 1999. If anyone can enlighten me on what the ALUMINUM AMPACT POWER WEDGE OVERHEAD TAP piece or the heavy brass valve was used for I would appreciate it. Total cash found for 3 days work $16.86.
Thanks for looking,
Dave
