Finds from the Winter Wheat Field

Through research I found there was likely an early structure located here, maybe some type of an early barn due to the lack of nails in the soil... I didn't find a single one! :dontknow:

It was probably already gone by the time the 1878 map I'm using was printed. I found a couple of early buttons, a horse shoe, a dropped three-ring bullet and my first ox shoe in four years! :laughing7:

If anyone can tell me what the pointed iron piece with the round loop in the upper right corner of my 'finds photo' is, I'd appreciate it! :thumbsup:

Also, just wanted to show you a picture of the amount of horse shoes I've dug over the past 4 years of farm hunting... my first year I only detected parks. To-date, I've dug 18 iron horse shoes, 3 aluminum race horse shoes, 3 ox shoes & 2 complete horse bits. I never get tired of finding horse shoes! :tongue3:

Neat finds!!! If it was a REALLY old structure it may have been made with pegs instead of nails.

my guess on the pointy thing would be 1 piece of a gate hinge. they would use two in a post or tree one above the other, and a L shaped piece to drive in the gate side that rotated in the hole of the part you have.

Nice finds Dave. I am curious about the purpose of the spike like thing with the round eyelet. I have found a couple of those on older sites, but have no idea what they were used for?

Nice looking buttons Dave, and getting an ox shoe after so many years. It looks longer (tail part) than the ones I usually dig so I wonder if a different variety or a complete one and all the others that I've seen have been broken.
Surprised that you were able to do a winter wheat field as my farms are a no go when they plant it, but the harvest is earlier the next season. I'll vote barn from the finds and lack of nails, or maybe just maybe I BEAT YOU TO IT! :laughing7:

Is the dropped lead still have a spur off the side or has it been hit? I was told years ago that the round iron with the spike was from hand implements, the hoe part has broken/rusted off. Seems like every site will give one up, but I'm not positive on this ID.

Now that I think about it, the spike was probably a tine that went into a wooden handle. Now what went through the round band?

I'm thinking more likely a log cabin, these were very common in this part of Ontario in the early 19thc.

This piece is definitely a mystery, a friend of mine suggested it might have to do with logging timber. :dontknow:

The metal is in good shape, do to the quality of the iron used to make it.
I'll probably tumble it this winter to clean it up and preserve it. :thumbsup:

Thanks for your post and for your thoughts Steve, you've certainly got more experience with finds from older sites than I do! :thumbsup:

The archaeologists were sifting the eastern edge of this field a couple of months ago and the farmer said, that "he didn't mind if I 'poked around' a bit". :laughing7:

Thanks for your insight into the mystery tool Jim. I'm thinking a barn too, probably an early log structure due to the lack of the usual household finds.
The lead bullet is definitely a drop, as the interior of the base is still flat and intact... I think it's suffered plow damage. :icon_scratch:
