If you live in an older home, have you ever checked the heat register for finds?

I removed my kitchen register and stuck my hand in to see if anything was in there..after pulling out stuff like bobby pins and nails, I found this 1966 baseball coin.

The other side of the coin is below, along with a silver Rosie (found in the lateral duct pipe for my living room) and an old 14 kt gold watch (found in the master bedroom heat register).

What I couldn't reach with my hand I got by going to the basement and tapping hard on the lateral ducts (that lead to the main duct). I heard something flipping around in the one that leads to the living room, so I took it apart and there was my silver dime!

My house was built in '58 and I'm sure other homes have treasure in the ductwork as well!

Neat finds! I remember as a kid, that was my stash place for all my treasure ;D

Great idea! The house I bought was from the early 1900's-I searched through the basement etc-but never thought about the duct work-thanks!!

Yeah, I had a "secret" (that I was so excited about, I told everyone about) hiding place for my ducky bank when I was a kid in the duct. I've more or less checked these ducts in this house. I think I found a clad penny or two in one but that's about it. Very nice finds! And you didn't even have to go out in the cold!! ;D

i did maintenance at a mobile home park for a little while..... one day we had part of the bathroom floor torn out of one of the mobile homes..... i just glanced down in the heat register and there it was...... a 10k diamond ring.... small diamonds mind you but it was awesome....... i wasnt even a treasure hunter back then

I hid some seeds in ductwork back in the seventies.
And a rat got to em.Anyhow thats another story.
Thanks for the great advice.Another good place to look.

Cool discovery. Have you had the watch checked to see if it works? Or can be repaired if it doesn't work? It could be worth a lot of money. Thanks for sharing your pics with us.

Great finds! If there was anything in my ducts it got sucked up in the vacuum. But you bet I'll be checking out my parents duct work.

My house is in the 80 to 100 year range, and I have found a 54 Washington and at least one wheat penny in my duct work. In remodeling this house, I found a ton of stuff, mostly wheats but 3 silver Washingtons, a silver Rosey and a Mercury. My brother in law is getting ready to move out of an old house and I'm going to encourage him to search the ducts before he goes.

Yeah Ron it didn't work so I took it apart and got it running..a little erratic, but it does work!

You are a genius to check those ducts. That pocket watch is awesome and really holds the history of your house. I wish I lived in an old house.

Floor registers are a depository for treasures, in an old spider system the ducts all run back to the furnace or air handler. Every one of them contain treasure, coins, jewelry, baseball cards, small toys, paper money, and a bunch of garbage you really wouldn't even want to touch. All you have to do is pop one joint and you can spill these treasures into a bucket.

Hey PP22 I don't believe that's a pocket watch . Looks to me like one a lady would wear on a chain around her neck . HH :o

Wow Nat!! And you didn't even have to leave the comfort of your warm abode. ;) WTG!

Great find Natman! Another place to check (only for people with a strong stomach) is the U pipe under the sink. Years ago, my cousin dropped her earing in the bathroom sink. When I took apart the plumbing I found a 10k ring along with the earing (and a whole lotta sludge :P ).

Never tried this but I will tonight!

I grew up in the house we now own, built in 1870. We took apart an old cast wood/coal furnace, my husband comes up with all these marbles, 40-50 of them. I told my Dad about the find...........he starts laughing, he says "there yours! You used to like to here the noise when you tossed them down the grates!" How many people can say they lost their marbles, and then found them (ok found most of them ;)) ;D

Nice place to hunt when it's cold outside!

Nice ! I did ductwork for years and used to find all kinds of stuff !My dad once found a diamond ring and it was quite common to find old marbles and toys. Some of the old systems would have a large return air grate in the floor, these were the best ! I also once worked on a pellet stove for a lady that had 3 kids,As i was taking it apart i started to find toys and even a coloring book that the kids had stuffed in there ! As i was pulling them out the kids were like "hey theres my power ranger" lol ;D
