A simple thimble.
Industrious folks.
Self sufficient , creating clothing and mending it. Even creating art. As with a single woman decorating a "pocket" with embroidery won exposed outside her apron to demonstrate her skill with a needle.

Then the "thumb bell" falling to rest for decades. Till an ambitious GUY recovered it....

The button was probably missed when lost. (!). More so in winter...
