Before I knocked the dirt off this little brass piece, I had hope that it could possibly be a finial from a union cartridge box.

After cleaning and digging some of the rust out of the gap, I see no evidence of leather.

Does anyone recognize this piece? Or possibly provide suggestions what it could have been attached to?

Brass overall height = 0.80", width = 0.62"

I would say some type of knob as well. Looks a little big for a cartridge box finial.

I had hoped it was a Cartridge Box Final , now seeing the hole in the Iron bottom & the very little space there would be for the leather to fit , I must say decorative lamp shade or other knob .

It's still a keeper JIC , + your site does not have much or any late 1800's-1960 ish ? trash , YNK.
