Found a piece of hardware in ruins from an old building demolition. It is approx 6 x 8 inches, iron, no patent markings.
Function as a flap of some sort is apparent from round hinge visible on left, matching hinge was likely on right side where it can be seen to have cracked away. Middle bottom features a pull ring that has mostly rusted away. slightly narrower at the top above hinge.
Sorry for the poor photo, but in person inspection brought guesses of something similar to an ash tray cover from a stove, though the back shows no definite signs of intense heat or fire.
Best guess so far is a fireplace ash dump door (see attached).
