Well I found my first really cool silver today. Searching around an old home in North Texas I popped up this barber quarter only about 3 inches down!
I can barely read the front but I can tell it still has good definition under all the "crust" and discoloration. I can't even make out the date. A little disappointed. Anyone have some good tips to remove this "crust" and discoloration??? I know people feel very strongly about not cleaning old coins but I would like to actually be able to read my first good silver. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on the quarter. Here is a way to clean your coin. Lay a piece of tin foil in a small glass bowl and lay the coin on top of the foil. Cover the coil with baking soda and a dash of salt, and pour boiling water over the coin until it is fully under water. A chemical reaction starts that dissolves the corrosion on the coin. Let it set till the water cools and then wipe the coin with a soft cloth. If it still isn't fully clean, repeat the process.

Great find, it looks like 1909 to me!

And SusanMN, thanks for sharing that tip! I will definitely have to try that in the future!

Great find asmerri!

That's around a $50 coin nice first barber

I would be scared to do that if there was much corrosion. I have seen coins with big pits because ALL of the surface corrosion has been removed (especially copper). Personally I would let it soak in a mild dilute solution of soap and hot water. Then dab the surface (don't rub) with a cloth until you have removed any loose soil etc. THEN see what it looks like. This may be all you need to do. I have yet to resort to heavy cleaning for ANY silver coins I've found.

BTW I found my first Barber half and quarter this last month! Congrats on yours, hope you post a pic of it cleaned up later!

Just saw you cleaned it with that chemical reaction method.

That really isn't a good way to clean a silver coin, it will make it "shiny" but will kill almost any value.
