Well I found my first really cool silver today. Searching around an old home in North Texas I popped up this barber quarter only about 3 inches down!
I can barely read the front but I can tell it still has good definition under all the "crust" and discoloration. I can't even make out the date. A little disappointed. Anyone have some good tips to remove this "crust" and discoloration??? I know people feel very strongly about not cleaning old coins but I would like to actually be able to read my first good silver. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats! It's a thrill. Many more to come!

Great Find Man!!...Where abouts are you in North Texas?

Awesome find!!

Still haven't dug one of those. Dug just about everything else, but no Barber Quarter.

Congrats!

Here's my cleaning video. This is all I do to silvers. If they are stained or plow-struck, they are what they are. I don't go any farther than this:

Cheers,

Buck

Hi Buck,

I actually watched your video on YouTube and tried this method. Whatever type of buildup that was on the coin was not going anywhere without some major encouragement. I'm only able to go hunting a couple times a month so you can imagine how few silvers I actually find. If I had a pile of old silver barbers I would have no problem just leaving the coin as-is but since its such a rare find for me I had to do something to see exactly what I had found.

I will definitely use your method for future silvers that simply need dirt removed from them.

Thanks for the info!
