Two hour hunt after work today in a farm field yielded a decent handful of bullets. : ) What's the one next to the 3 ringers? One ring on the bottom, but too big for pistol bullet? I'm not very in the know on my civil war goodies.

Congrats!

You have two minie balls on the left, they MAY be Confederate, I can't tell without measurements. On their right are two ring tail Sharps bullets, they ARE Confederate, then two Sharps bullets.

Three on bottom left are probably Colt pistol balls. Way to go! What do the bottom of the minies look like?

To the right of the Minie' Balls are actually .52 caliber Linen Sharps which had a linen or cloth powder envelope which was glued to the bullet. Not really a true ringtail but it had a base that will almost fool the eye as being one. The others bullets are Sharps Carbine as well and had a skin or paper powder envelope. The smaller bullets are .44 caliber for the .44 caliber Colt Army revolver. Of course they would fire in any .44 caliber pistol.

It's ammo that's often found in Yankee Cavalry camps. Who really knows, but someone was toting pistols and carbines along with the muskets. May be a mix of cavalry and infantry. I hope there's a plate hiding in there for you.

Great saves!

I agree with waterhead on the bullet IDs. I found loads of the same types at the civil war camp about 25 miles from home. Keep pounding the site. I got some nice coins, some brass civil war hardware and over 200 bullets from my site in 2 years of off and on digging. Good luck with your site and keep swingin.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I will try to get pictures of the bottom of the 3 ringers tomorrow. I'm comfy in my hotel room now and they're out in the car. Thanks for the info. This place is awesome. It was occupied by both union and confederate troops at different times during the war. I know this field has been hunted, but still lots of signals to be dug. The owner was super friendly, he was excited to see I pulled some bullets out. He has a detector of his own and asked me to come dig with him some time. I got the green light to come back and hunt more already. I'm pretty happy. I constantly drive by these battle fields, forts, and camp sites, but so far I haven't had any luck with a producing permission. I'd love to find a plate, even some buttons would be exciting.

Very nice :icon_thumleft:...keep it up
This would be a true ringtail I guess

Yes, that is a true ringtail Sharps which had a ton of variants.

Those two bullets like they were a water finds.
