Thanks to all for the help on " What is it ?" to ID this coin !! 1732 Portuguese 5 Reis ~ I dug this coin from a field that continues to give up coins from around the world, understandable, as Martha's Vineyard was a port for many ships. Other coins from this field include a host of King Gorges , Spanish 1/2 reale , Irish 1/2 penny, English Druid Coin, 2 cent piece Haiti ,and half a dozen early American coppers. I hope to get back into the major part of the field when they cut it this spring.

Nice Oldy
I agree you are in a prime spot for good finds,
try finding out where the old shipyards were, these have yielded rich finds for me!
Best Digs :hello:

Great find...I havent been able to break into the 1700's yet here in the Manchester NH area yet,I did manage an 1856 Large cent on Saturday.Nice considering only my 3rd hunt of the year.I visited Marthas Vinyard last September for a Memorial Service for my Aunt.Reception was at the rod and gun club.My boys found lots of spent shell casings there they brought home.

Couple gun clubs out here, not sure which one you were at ? I've found a few .50cal slug on south beech near the Chappy end, they used it during WW II for target runs. You guy's still frozen in up there ? I have an aunt in Greenfield ,NH with a pre 1800's farm house and am looking forward to detecting it. Good luck finding that pre 1800 coin !!!!!!
