Still getting used to the MXT - lots of power and capabilities.
Tried it for the first time in Prospecting mode today

No gold, but boy what a view as California poppies were all over the place.
Bones - I don't know. Looks like thoracic or cervical vertebrae for a possum
or skunk, but I'm not familiar with such long spines.

Two 32-caliber shell casings, a fishing weight, an old hook,
and some coins. '67 quarter and '81 penny.
Oh, well, there'll be better days!

There will be better days indeed! Once you are used to your detector you will be finding all kinds of cool stuff!

Next time out you may find a gold vein out there in California. I know seasoned pros who use the MXT in Prospecting mode and have relied on it for a long time to find their gold veins. HH :icon_sunny:

Hey Vinnie

Thanks for sharing your experience in Prospecting mode with the MXT

Try to run the SAT (dual mode) as high as possible... this will diminish the noise of the mineralization in the ground.

Practice with a small buckshot or a small piece of aluminum foil wadded up... they seem to test just about like gold does.

Tape the buckshot or small wad of foil to a 3x5 card and practice with it in gold territory. You will learn how to separate the quick and abrupt response of gold with that of high mineralized ground which has a slower response.

Picture your gold territory as an area of hot spots and cold spots from minerals that produce responses as the MXT coil sweeps across the ground. The higher the SAT control is set then the less these hot spots and cold spots produce sound.

Now picture a few small gold nuggets peppered on this same ground among these hot and cold spots. The gold nugget will produce a quicker response than the hot and cold spots and the ability to distinguish between these will be how much gold you find.

That is why the practice with the 3x5 card with a test particle is important.

Hyper-SAT will bring back some of the sensitivity loss but throws in its own unique problem. The nugget will be located not under the center but between the center and the trailing edge of the coil... this is because it takes time for the hyperSat circuit to operate.

I have found too that in the hyperSAT mode that the gain can be cranked up as well. YMMV

At least you did not get skunked and it proves the machine and operator are working as a team.

I nugget hunted in CA. and AZ. off and on for over a year. Used my MXT with the 5.3 coil. It worked fair, even found a few small nuggets. But wow that nugget hunting is tough and few and far between ! Found a lot more interesting things than I did nuggets. I am back in Kansas now but when I get back out there I will have a small DD coil to help with that mineralization and feel it will do a much better job finding those small nuggets. You find lots of small lead buckshot and if you are finding those you will find gold if you go over it ! Good Luck !

I've had my MXT for a couple of years and have to yet use the prospecting mode :P or the coin/jewelry mode. :D Thanks for the info, Sanat..might have to try that some time.

Congrats on your finds, UV! Nana :)
