This will be my first MD and i think i made the right choice. Im mainly a snorkeler whos taking a scuba course this winter. I need a machine that'll handle the riggers or underwater hunts and the Excal. seems like the logical choice. My question is living up north there'll obviously be days when the weather doesnt allow for underwater adventure, is the Excal. a reliable inland detector or will i need to purchase a separate detector to fill that need?

Thank you all

never heard of it ;)
It's about the most popular one for beach and kellyco is reliable.
If you are gonna get it...do it now...I just noticed they are on sale!!!
They normally run $1099..go for it, it's the one I want , but no $. :(

Thanks for the reply syko.

Also. I know this detector is great in salt/fresh waters but would i also need to purchase a separate metal detector for coin hunting such as an ACE.

it heavy from what the other dudes running it say
need a sep. land dedicated unit
unless you hip or chest mount it
try the shallow water surf section just cut and paste the thread to a topic message you start

I owned the Excalibur 1000 and you can buy a shaft such as the "Florida Straight Shaft" and then the detector will be balanced and easy to use on land.

But if you never owned a Minelab you'll need some adjustment time. Minelabs are not at all like any other brand detector. People either love Minelabs or hate them. There are always loads of these for sale "like new."

The Excalibur is simple to opporate but understanding its language (like all Minelabs) is a whole different story.

I'd recommend the Excalibur for your ocean hunting and the Sovereign GT for land. Any Tesoro from the Silver on up is also a great choice for land hunting. I'd take the Tesoro Silver uMax any day over the Garrett Ace 250.

Badger

Badger is right on in his suggestions. I use the Excal 1000 for wading and diving and have found it to be fantastic. You can use it for land but being a water detector it will be heavier unless you hip mount it. I hang mine from agound my neck while wading. For land I have used many detectors and new new one is the Sovereign GT, the land version of the Excal. I love it. It has more features than a Excal and is cheaper to buy too.

Drudge,

Do not buy your detector yet. I have been detecting in the northeast for 30 yrs. if you want my opinion you need a Tesoro Tigershark fore fresh water give me a pm and we can talk, I will be available today for a couple of hrs. and tomorrow for a few hrs. also and 9-6 every work day.

Drudge,

The Excal is a wonderful machine as some of the other responder have said. I fresh water hunt with the Tesoro TS in Connecticut, if you have any questions on that I would be glad to help. Joe

Well i've done a little more reading and it seems like the Excal. might be the all in one detector i need. I'll be mainly using it when im in Florida or going to the lakes here in CT. It seems to me like the only drawback is that it tends to get heavy on land. I dont mind the weight for the few hours i'll be using it inland during the weekends. Another plus is that is just like the Sovereign so any other land detector like the ace250 might be inferior. I still havent purchased anything but this Excal. is looking more and more tempting with everything it can do.

Drudge, I have an Excal and I love it, if your going to beach hunt they are the best. I think so highly of the Excal that my backup unit for my Excal is another Excal.. ;D

A little friendly advice, get a straight shaft for it, and be sure to get a harness, you will not notice the weight if you do. I can hunt for hours with mine and my legs give out long before my arm ever does. The harness supports the weight of the shaft and coil, it also allows you to let go of the unit while your in the water and the detector hangs right there by you.

Thank you all for the replys to questions that have probably been asked time and time again ;D. Anyway the transaction has been done and hopefully the great northeast will be unseasonably warm in December so i can test this baby out.

Thanks Again
