First ever

Got my first metal detector yesterday for Christmas....today was my first hunt. Nothing exciting, just in my side yard. I had a lot of low hits that didn't produce anything...dug a plug, spread it out a bit and the signal was gone.

I did hit on two pieces from the recent renovations at my home...a little bit of solder, and a piece from a small bolt.

I hit two other things which I can't be sure of....

One is a whitish clump that hit as a coin....it is very light. It looks like it could be a crumpled up bit of aluminum siding or flashing.

The other also hit as a coin, but it is very heavy and black...a little scraping reveals what looks like copper under a bunch of dirt or oxidation.

The light, white thing is aluminum. Welcome, and the more you dig, the more you get! My friend found a 14k gold ring in my LAWN a couple weeks ago. Who would have thought?

Welcome to the hobby of sanity that is anything but.........it gets worse (better)..........the more you find, the more you'll want to dig!!
Seriously, use that new machine, give it all your attention and listen closely for the first 100 hours or so........you'll be amazed at how much it will tell you.
Then the real fun begins!!

Just keep it up the real good stuff will come try some play areas at parks under the end of slides and swings are good for coins also any bars where kids spin around.

I think you may have already realised that the machine lies, & it makes little difference what they hit at or what number they are. What is more important is the sound, so look less & dig more & you will do well.

Yeah, if you don't have one buying a pin pointer is a major big help finding things. If your just looking with your eyes you will soon find out things get camouflaged in dirt. Like the other suggestions, you need a place to hunt where there possibly could be allot of coins around, this will help teach you and your machine what coins sound like. You can also bury your own coins to learn too. Good luck, keep digging and welcome to the site.
