First gold along with relics

Went an did a little field inspecting and noticed lots of brick pottery and glass all over the ground. After finding a few mid 1800's Indians I pop out a gold ring. I thought it was a brass ring until I got home and saw 14k on it. Next was a
Gold plated fed eagle button and a little snake piece. The little snake looked like copper until I gave the scratch test and it shined like gold



















































Need a little help with identifying the age of the old eagle stuff. How can I clean the gold up right. HH

Thanks. I imagine these pieces have been in the ground for over 100 years. How can I test / clean the gold? Any ideas on how early the eagle button is? I'm near a war of 1812 battle sight

Cleaned up the ring I do think it's gold I'm going to test it in a couple of days . It does look promising!

Your ring is brass. Gold does not tarnish underground.

The eagle button looks like a 3-piece "muffin" style, which would make it a Staff Officer button or similar. Can you read the backmark on it?

Bummer on the ring. Still cool though. The back of the button says Waterbury button company. What time period would that button be?

If and when you dig gold, a simple rinse of water and it will shine like it was dropped yesterday! I have dug several brass rings in fields sites that were stamped 14k and dug one the other day that was stamped 18k.....unfortunately both were fakes.

The waterbury button company backmark is 1880s or 90s, and I agree that the ring is very cool--and old~!

The ring very brass! Unfortunate but the spot does have Indian heads on the surface so hopefully I'll be finding silver once the field is cut. What i love about this spot is that everything is in the 1860 - 1890 era without trash. these spots are hard to find and I am very surprised that these spots havent been MDed! More updates are on their way, HH everyone
