Today, I decided to hit the new permission that I got last night. The sun was shining and temps were predicted to be in the 50's. With the exception of the owner's son staying here temporarily, the house is vacant and being remodeled. The owner is in between contractors, so there was nobody really here.
First thing I did was hit the backyard and try to figure out where the clothesline once stood. I found a few wheat pennies and a 1940 Jefferson Nickel, all in a row so I guess that is where the clothesline once stood.
I managed a few artifacts from yesteryear that passed the time while trying to locate silver. One item was a pre-1930 gaslight valve and then a rectangular compact. Finally about 3 hours into the hunt, I dug out a sweet sounding Mercury Dime. (1942). About 2 feet past the Mercury, the DEUS kept saying deep penny, maybe silver. No brainer, dig it out. Nice surprise, a lead podfooted machine gunner. (1945 - 50's)
Yep, first hunt of 2018 had good weather, easy digging soil, and a couple of sweet saves.
I call that a successful hunt.
Boy, am I a happy camper.
