Went back to one of my haunts with the new White's MX5. I'm REALLY likin' this machine the more I get used to it.
Got a solid 78-80 on the VDI, reasonably deep. BAM! A Merc dime! SWEET! or wait....

As I'm excitedly rubbing the mud away, I was pushing the mud through weird holes in the coin and there's something attached to it...

Closer inspection reveals a NEAT little earring made from a Mercury dime. TOO COOL!

My first find like this. The surface of the dime has been cut away and there's a silver thumbscrew to clamp in to the ear.

Anyone ever see one of these before?

Excellent find. Nice creative work too.
Too bad they used a 1916-d. :dontknow:

;)

I used to make those when I was in the Navy in the '60's...........Damm I'm old!:BangHead:

Kinda resembles a love token of sorts. You might have something there worth looking into. A reputable coin dealer might be able to give you some answers as love tokens are in HIGH demand at the moment.

I have seen quite a number of cut out coins over the last 35 years or so - They don't appear as dug up items very often . It would not
surprise me to hear that these originated as some form of "trench art " sort of a cousin to the "spoon rings " ( made by hammering the edge
of a silver coin repeatedly - then cutting out the center to the needed size) . Your earring with the "screwback " finding is circa 1940's - 60's
I've never seen one with that finding - Nice .

That is just to cool. Awesome find. Congrats

congrats on an awesome find!

COOL! Sweet find mister. Congrats!

Used to have a cut dime of an eagle.

Awesome find. I have never saw one out of a merc. Dime before. Congrats on the amazing find.

How the heck do they make these? Yeah, it's clearly a cut-out Merc, 'cause part of the back (the wheat stalks) are there too.

Thanks for the info.... The screwback is one I've never seen either.
