Garret Ace 250, AT Pro, Garret Pro Pointer
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
After learning my detector and digging methods on private property for the last few months, I decided to try out a local city park. I obtained permission from the park superintendent via email to hunt any city parks, as long as I didn't make a mess :-)

The park I chose is just south of Corydon, IN. It has only been around since the early 70s, so not very old in that respect. I kept my hunt mostly to the wooded area as the shade felt nice, and around some of the playground equipment (basically the areas where most people hang out in the summer). My Ace 250 and Garret Pro pointer do a great job of finding coins, as well as pull tabs! I'd say this park has probably been well hunted in the past, but I was pretty happy that I found something. Overall I found 96 cents in clad, a few copper pennies in there, and the usual pile of pull tabs/bottle caps/shredded aluminum can. I ran into some of the grounds keepers while hunting, they seemed pretty cool and got a good laugh out of my bag of pull tabs.

To top it off, after 10 AM, a gentleman sets up a hot dog booth in the park, selling various dogs, brats, and drinks. Needless to say I didn't get very hungry during my 4 hour hunt!

The green bottle was found by my friend while we were hunting by a creek several weeks ago. I cleaned it up, put some flowers in it, and gave it to my girlfriend. She seemed to like it!

Jeremy, learning your detector and honing your digging technique before hunting a public park shows that you are a credit to the hobby. Good for you! I have yet to hunt a park, but am working on my technique as well.

Well said! Congratulations on your ever improving skills, and your most recent clad finds. For most people, a little pile of pocket change means nothing, but I get a big charge out of finding it!

Now you just gotta hit the books at the library dig up some info on some old spots that could have been over looked.....i found a 1950 girl scout camp buildt 10 miles from my house on a geocatch site ....they have some good leads from time to time

fishdaddy, Not sure brand of drink was in this bottle, but the color and shape narrows it down to 7 UP or Mt. Dew.

I have indeed been researching some old places to go. I located the property where an old general store that was operated by my great-grandparents (operated from the turn of the century until the 1940s). I also found out that some distant cousins still own the property, and have obtained permission to go there sometime. That may be a fall trip when the weeds and ticks die down though.

I plan on hitting a different park early tomorrow morning. Most of the coins that I found were very shallow, and I was about to "pop" them out of the ground without making a hole. The deeper targets that I dug up were all trash.

I havent been detecting long but i spent way too long looking at the wrong places when i should have been at the library...when i did find my first silve rin a small old park i thought i got it all cleaned out ... of course another trip back and alot of junk later i took 11 silver out that day and 3 the next and 18 total ....just need to find some old dirt to dig in and the goodies will come

Hey Jeremy! I live about 20-25 minutes from you. Corydon has some rich history, and if you're into relics at all, was the site of a small Civil War skirmish in July of 1863. There's a battlefield park in Corydon (you can't hunt there), but a lot of the surrounding areas where Morgan's men marched north to Corydon from the Ohio River are still open fields or woods. It might be worth a little research to see what you can find, and then get permission to hunt.

I grew up in Corydon, but actually live just down the road in Georgetown now. I can't metal detect in any of the Floyd country parks around my house, they decided to copy Louisville by banning anything fun. Hopefully this hot weather cools down this week, as I would like to go out a few afternoons and hit a few more places.

Congrats on the clad. Should have many more runs at that park GL

Good job on the hunt. If you keep all the scrap metal you find, eventually you will be able to buy the batteries for your MD. And good job for keeping your better half happy. Get her to go with you and share in the experience of the find..Well done!! :occasion14:

Good deal on your first park hunt, Listen if you ever need a lead PM me and me and my cousin will try and help you out but please do the same for us...
