Detector(s) used
Minelab Safari, Garrett GTP 1350, Ace 250, Detector Pro Pistol Probe
I love this detector! My first day out today and dug a ton a clad and a womens watch. No old silver but that was just the area I was in. Pinpoint mode on this thing is deadly. Dead on every time. The tones and change in pitch were quite easy to pick up, but I also play guitar so its a little easier for me to hear. It will take me some time to learn the numbers but you sure know when you hit a coin, locks on hard. Pennies 34-35 dimes 36-37 and quarters were 38-39, pulltabs ranging anywhere from the teens to uper 20's sometimes. The watch locked on at a 31. The only thing I noticed is that the numbers lagged a little behind the tones, I'd have to pull the detector away and let it reset almost. ??? Is it supposed to do that? It also uses the juice. I hunted 5 hours today and drained a brand new set of energizers down to half but wasnt using headphones either. All in all I really like it and cant wait to get out with it again. Josh

Use some headphones bro and save your wallet...Sounds like you had some good successes...

Headphones will definitely increase your run time... not sure by how much though. Good luck with the Safari! HH :)

Ya Ive got some headphones on their way. I'd say my first time out was a success too, had alot of fun. I cant wait to get out to an older site!

Congrats on a great first hunt! Looks like you're picking up on the Safari rather quick!

Yes, the screen does lag behind the detector sometimes. What helps is to make sure you noise cancel with no metal objects nearby, and slow your swing down. When you get a good target, make your side to side sweeps short until you lock on to the target when the ground is trashy.

My first time out I nailed a nice 1903 IH, but I have yet to run over any silver. I know I'll get there soon enough, I just need to do some research to put me over the silver.

Thanks for the tip Ray I was hoping it wasnt just mine. I wonder if anyone has called minelab about it? Ya I saw your indian head, very nice find. Ive never found one, just wheaties.

Hi hollywood,

An IH penny should come in at +37 on your Safari. At least that's where mine came in. Some memorial cents will fall in that range too, but others may come in the +34 to +36 ranges.

Nickels are a dead giveaway. They come in at +13 solid. Today I took the Safari out to a new place (which is an old park back from the 20's) and found a dateless buffalo nickel. I was using relic mode when I found it. I'm hoping this will be the park that will finally produce some silver for me, although I have eyed another one that dates back to 1905 that I'm anxious to try.

I soaked the nickel for about 20 minutes in a 50/50 mix of Lime Away and warm water to clean it. As you can see, the Washington soil has been pretty harsh on it.

In time, you will be looking less at the numbers, and hunting by tone and depth of the target. That's the natural progression in learning/mastering any of the Minelab machines. The real deep targets will not give you solid numbers, and if you learn to hunt solely by the numbers, you are going to be missing the real deepies, which usually are the better, older targets. Learning the tones of the various coins (copper, silver, zinc, etc.), and how the tone begins to get choppy (but still true to pitch) and more fluty on the deeper targets is the secret to finding the deeper, older stuff.

Good luck.
