First silver..... and it's a Standing Liberty Quarter!

This past Saturday I took out my White's Coinmaster Pro for the third time- I've been hunting my stepfather's house as he lives in an area that was previously a small town/settlement centered around an old lumber yard. The last two times I hunted there I found some turn of the century tent rope tensioners, an old dairy token, an early 1900's military button and other random bits of old tools. Other than a couple of Wheaties, I hadn't found any coinage here up until Saturday.

I was working my way through the front piece of his 3 acres, chasing a few erratic signals here and there (I really need to learn how to deal with those better). Right before I found the silver I hit a solid signal that showed 8+ inches down, and after using the Lesche and not finding anything I had to break out a full sized shovel. Finally at about 18 inches I found an old metal bowl with blue and white designs on it. I was very impressed that the Coinmaster Pro found this at that depth! Must be because it was so large???

At any rate, right after that I hit a solid signal about 4" down and out popped this- my FIRST silver ever on my third trip out! I was so blown away to wipe the dirt off this and see what it was. At first, I was telling myself it was a modern state quarter before it was clear what it was. The feeling of finding something like this and holding it in my hand was priceless and I'm hoping there's more of this stuff out there!

Thanks guys.... I'm pretty stoked!

I wish there was a way to get an idea of what was once on this land, as I'm sure it would help me focus my search. I'm not too good with the research side of this hobby, and Google Earth doesn't go that far back.... :laughing7:

I put the magnifying glass on your photo, and it looks like a 1925 Standing Liberty Quarter. The name Walking Liberty is usually a reference to a half dollar. The date should be at the bottom of Liberty's feet. Looks to be in very good condition too, but would like to see a photo of just the front and back if possible.

EXCELLENT FIRST SILVER!!! It took me MUCH longer to get my first SLQ, and any day I uncover one I am certain to be doing the Snoopy Happy Dance!

Point taken on the Walking vs. Standing Liberty name.... silly newbie mistake... :laughing7: And yes, it is a 1925 and does appear to be in overall great condition. I took a quick peek online and these don't seem to be overly valuable, although I would imagine it is worth more than melt, right?

Thanks again for the kind words.... Somehow I think it is going to be tough to top this find, but I still have a lot of area to check out there. Unfortunately, the stepfather built a new home on the property and covered up a good chunk of ground but there's still a lot to check out there. I suppose once I've covered all the ground, I should sweep it a second time.

If ya have the property, you have the time :icon_sunny: . To me its not always about the value of the find, but the fact that its has been re-discovered. Once you find history, or can return an item to its original owner, you will be amazed at the personal feeling and accomplishment you discover with in yourself.

look forward to other finds..

I'm with ya on the value not being #1... that comment was more meant to see if anyone could shed any more light on any extra special value to this coin. Although that isn't necessarily very important, on the other hand I wouldn't want to have some super rare, high value coin and not know it... ;D
