Got into the 40's so I decided to try my luck at a beach site where the kids used to party back in the day. Frost line was 6" so the sand was like concrete but pulled a merc on my second signal. That put a smile on the face since I had'nt pulled any silver the last two times I'd hunted here. Ran into a friend who had found an old padlock and a whatsit that I posted in the "What is it" section. Was just about to give it up when I started finding Wheats. Found four in a small area, each one took at least ten minutes to chip out of the icy sand. Decided to try the bank leading down to the beach and hit a silver roosy that took 20 minutes to extract. Decided to pack it in but hit another silver signal on the way out, after another 20 minutes of digging I was down over a foot thinking "this has got to be a beer can" when out pops the Walker ;D 1923S. Really was not expecting that, made for a great silver start for 2012.

Thanks, never gotten a seated that's way cool. One thing that dawned on me today was that 3 of the 4 half dollars I have found came out of sandy areas, which kind of makes sense because the coin would sink out of sight faster than it would on grass. It's supposed to be 50 degrees here tommorrow so hopefully the lakeshore will thaw a little, have a feeling we're in for a long freeze after this warm spell.

Yes we are having very strange weather. I too think that we are gonna pay for it eventually. Nice finds!!

GREAT FINDS!!!! I'm originaly from that area.... sooo it's nice to see that I wasn't the only crazy one hunting Western Montana in the winter!!! lol... keep it going and post more of your finds! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Nice to see some Montanan's hitting it in Jan., usually we're sub zero and the ground is like steel. I haven't been out since Oct., maybe I'll have to reconsider if this weather holds...

Nice finds! :icon_thumright:

Mud Magnet,

Great way to take advantage of the unusually warm winter weather--nicely done!

All the best,

Lanny

Great recoveries , I too used to live in the Big Sky Country , Libby , Red Lodge , and Helena -
what kind of detector will hit a half at a foot deep ? Argentium.

Thanks Argentium, I was using a Minelab Explorer Se pro with a deep silver program out of a book called "The explorer and Etrac handbbok". I've only been able to use it a couple times since I put the deep program on it and have been getting coins at impresive depths. Hoping the weather will hold a little longer so I can rehit some of my favorite spots.

awesome... I love walkers :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Great start to a great year!!!

Sweet!!!

And they look like to be in great shape!
