First Silver x 2!! - 1918 Merc & Unknown Seated Liberty

Was hunting in the same backyard of the building I own (built in 1900) and uncovered my first silver dimes. I thought the Seated Liberty was an aluminum tag because it is severly worn and has two holes in it. It was not until I got it home and ran it under water that I was able to see the outline on the front.

Nothing like you first silver being from the 1800's. Any idea on the date or will 1837-1891 have to do?

Congrats on your first silver..that outline on the seated coin looks kind of eerie! Nice find from a bygone era.

You'll never know what the date was on that one, but it sure boggles the imagination of what else is waiting out there for you to find.

Nat

I must have just looked at the back of it when I picked it up and I am thankful that I did not leave it with the other trash. I was pleasantly surprised once I rinsed it off and looked at it in good light.

Nice finds Wardster, those are some cool silver coins. On the one with holes in it, my dad grew up in the 30s and said they punched holes in there coins and put a string through them because there were holes in there pockets, they tied the string to there belt loops and then put the string of coins in there pocket for safe keeping.

Congrats on your finds

Nice couple coins. The 1876 and 1877 years were very common. But if your's was holed it probably is older than that. Good job. :)

Great job!

That brass thing in your other post is a natural gas key. It probably still works (turning on and shutting off a gas fireplace or heater).

Be really careful about throwing stuff from that yard away. Sometimes things are bent and some things just look like junk, but are in reality very cool relics.

Are you using the 9.5 coil on the DFX? If so, you should clear small areas of all targets. If an area has many targets the DFX gets confused until the targets get thinned out a little.

You may have noticed also that the DFX thinks really deep iron targets are silver coins. If you can clear those deep targets out you may find lots of smaller ones right next to where they were.

Keep the coins and relics coming!

Congratulations on your first silver!

Yes, it is the stock coil. I know what you mean about the confusion, so I make it a point to dig about everything. In the same yard I found an area about 2 feet in diameter that was making all kinds of racket, but indicated a consistent oenny/dime reading. Before I was though I had picked 9 memorial pennies out of the ground. Since I own the property, I will make it a point to spend plenty of time there digging whatever I can.

A classic case of "I have some good news and some bad news!"
