Hi all, first time poster long time reader. Ever since last summer I have found my self addicted to MDing as well as this site. All of your posts just amaze me, and leave me wanting to get out their and do half as well as some of you. Living in an over populated and developed town in New Jersey, but with a long history, it often frustrates me having a lack of older places to detect, but I still get out their when I can. But this past April I was able to get up to my grandpas place in up state Massachusetts. He has about 44 acres of old farm land, which borders another 200 acres which i recieved permission to go on. All of the property is covered with various rock walls, calverts, some old foundations, old dumps filled with glass and kitchenware, and also borders an old road that is no longer in use. This past trip I got in about 8 good hours of detecting, the highlights were a 1864 bronze no L indian head penny with a full liberty, a 1915 barber dime also with a full liberty, and the best of all what I think to be a 1807 Draped Bust Large Cent (the date is barely visible). I also found a large decorative button,a belt buckle, an old pocket knife, and a flat button. I had the time of my life to say the least, and I hardly covered any ground what so ever. I hope to get pictures up soon. What really encourages me about this site is the wide range in years between the coins.

The one thing that puzzles me however is right below the driveway to my grandpas house is an old dump site, with glass, lots of junk metal, pottery, bricks, and some old farm equipment, however on the two maps I have of his street, one from 1867, and one from 1904, I see no mention of anyone living in that particular area, and I have also been unable to find a cellar hole. Im wondering if maybe their could have been a house there after the 1904 map. Also the dump is right below in a river bed that runs through and then parallel to where the old road leads. Any ideas where I should look? I honestly try to stay away from the area due to lack of time, and all the junk metal around, maybe if I get some more time up there I'll clean it up and hit it hard.

I just want to say what a great site this is, because of all of you, and your love for the hobby. Good hunting everyone. Bill

Welcome to TNet Blacksox,
You did well there, can't wait to see the pics.
What kind of detector are you using?

Maybe that was just a dump site. A little gully on the side of a river is a natural place to discard heaps of unwanted stuff. Maybe folks would haul the stuff there and away from their house. Sounds like you could dig some nice bottles there.
I'd hit next to the former road with the detector and all around any old foundations. Good luck. Sounds like a great site and years of enjoyment!

Your granpas site is a dream come true. Welcome to the wonderful hobby of pure enjoyment.

The dump site you are talking about could be from a home PRIOR to you maps
or even between those dates.
I have found homesites that are not on my 1840 or 1910 maps. They can be
dated, by the remains, to the time in between the maps.
As for detecting in the junk pile, I don't know what detector you are using, but
with a fair amount of practice, almost any detector, once you learn it well, will get
you to the good relics within a junk pile!
Good luck!!!
Byt hte way, WELCOME to Tnet AND the detecting addiction!!!

Man, I would be in heaven with a spot like that!!! Take your time there, heck, you could spend years there at that site. You are very lucky!

Welcome to T-Net. I have not been a member long but I am addicted as well. Sometimes I my wife thinks I am crazy for how much I read it. My parents have a similar old dumpsite that parallels an old road near a creek which is not used anymore. I am going to try to hit it hard this fall. I am sure there will be plenty more at your grandpa's.

Welcome to TreasureNet. You have found the Valhalla of sites. You have a location now that you could literally spend a lifetime searching, and never hunt it out. I'm still searching for mine... :icon_thumleft:
