Yep! January 1st season opened.

  • Flows remain high on the Chetco, but anglers who can hit the river as it drops between storms will have the best luck.
  • The Elk River is a best bet on the south coast for steelhead as most other rivers have been too high or muddy to fish.
  • When rivers are too high and muddy for steelhead fishing, Floras and Garrison lakes can be good options for a bit of trout fishing.
  • Early winter fishing for brown trout at Lemolo Reservoir can be great when weather allows.
  • Anglers are catching winter steelhead in the Coos and Coquille basins.
  • On the beaches near Charleston, anglers have been catching both redtail and striped surfperch.
  • Some early winter steelhead are being caught below Grants Pass on the middle Rogue.
  • The first reports of winter steelhead in the Grants Pass area means there should be some moving into the lower Applegate River.

The Chetco is looking good OV. The Smith River across the border is getting too clear for steelhead fishing so we headed up your way yesterday. I had a nice one on for a few moments but lost it. We saw 5 fish caught by other boat fishers. Beautiful day on the river.

Getting ready to shove off quite a ways upstream in drift boat.
