Found it this past weekend. It's about the size of a dime. I assume the material attached to it is leather. I wouldn't think normal cloth would last that long. I couldn't see any back marks, but it's hard to see with the material covering it.

Anyone ever seen a design like this?

I believe that when oriented correctly it reads CCC.
Possibly Civilian Conservation Corps.?

Looks more like a rivet type button to me. Like those found on overalls or work clothes. A better picture of the back will help ID it.

I thought it was a rivet when I first dug it, but it looks like a button shank on the back. Here is a better pic.

Nice find. Congrats!

Only in modern design.

rotate it 90 degrees to the left and it reads c little- c big - little c -- cCc --civilian conservation corps ---a govt labor program group big in the depression era years ( very late 20's early-mid 30's) --likely on a leather work jacket once upon a time ...

ah it might also be a Commerical Cable Company button --founded in 1884 to break the monopoly on transatlantic cable news --it finally came under International Telephone And Telegraph's control in 1928 and was reorganized in 1935 --it went from Waterville ,Ireland to Canso , Nova Scotia under water then to NYC overland at first then later on by "submarine" (underwater cable)

I seem to recall that some early underwater cables were in the North Carolina area --Jefferson NC I think

Were flat buttons made into the 1900's?

yes --some are still made to this day

I have never seen a shank that thick before. Why would it be pushed through the material? Are there two layers of material? What else can I ask?

think of a heavy duty leather work jacket button (for cold or rainy weather-)- ( much like a old fashioned seamans rain slicker ) --wearing this while doing heavy labor places a lot of strain / pressure on it -- think of a leather jacket with slit type holes --think of a set of coveralls and how heavy duty they're shanks are to stand up to the strain /load put upon them --the shank was put thru a small hole in the leather then pounded to flare it outward so it would not pull thru --it didn't the leather tore away instead leaving it the way it is

Here is a better pic of the shank. Yes, the leather/cloth is 2 layers.

its leather ....the button went thru both layers ..from the new photos ....its not a two piece type button bit rather a very heavy duty flat type button with a very heavy duty shank ... very likely from a heavy duty type leather oiled work jacket for cold or foul (rainy) weather ..cool find
