I went to the local Flea Market this morning just to kill some time and there were a couple guys there with artifacts. One was an older guy that I have seen there a number of times who has a bunch of bogus crap that is ridiculously priced and I have told him so numerous times. He swears they are all personal finds from a farm in Hillsboro Ohio, yet he has Folsoms, Perds, Montells, Bannerstones, Pipes, Bone Tools, and even African points that are all crap. Today he had a 13 inch point made of what looked like Hixton that he said came from a farm near him and it had a Montell base. I just laughed at him when he said he'd let it go for $10,000. I wonder just how many people actually walk around a Flea Market with ten grand in their pocket? lol

Anyway, I did find a guy that had good pieces, mostly field grade, but at least they were good. He had about 100 points he wanted $150 for which was a decent deal, but who wants to spend that much on field grade points when you can get out and find them. I did however pick out 14 pieces for $40 that are pretty nice. I got a tray of Ft Ancient Triangles, a really nice little black Knife made from a very high quality Zaleski Flint, and another larger Knife made from some very nicely colored Carter Cave. (at least I believe it's Carter. It could be Flint Ridge) He said these all came off a buddies farm in Ross county Ohio.

The large Knife has some very nice flaking on it, including some that looks to be Outre Passe type flaking. It probably isn't Paleo, but I can hope. The flaking terminates to a nice median ridge on one side and the other has the possible Outre Passe flaking. There is also a Spokeshave worked in near the tip on one edge and the other edge has had burin flaking done to it. The small black Zaleski piece is very well flaked bu unfortunately it doesn't show up well in the pictures. It has some very find pressure retouch flaking on both edges and is still very sharp.

I figure I have less than $3 each in them, $2.85 to be precise, so I didn't get hurt with them at all.

Enjoy the pics.

I think that the Red and white piece is made from Arkansas Novaculite. It appears to be the classic form for the material. Makes you wonder how it ended up in Ohio, but I've seen it before

Thanks Mooch. I was wodering about that material. I though maybe Carter Cave or Flint Ridge, but it didn't really seem like the right colors or texture for either. He said they all came off a farm in Ross county, Ohio, but then again he may have been saying to get me to buy them. Either way, it's definitely a good piece because there are deposits all over it, so I'm happy with it.

I had a friend one time buy me a gift from a flea market in the form of an arrowhead. It was very strange :laughing7:
Looks like you did ok though. Is some of that fort payne? Nice pieces SRV!

The black Blade is made from Zaleski which is a very high grade and glossy flint found in Vinton county Ohio around the town of McCarther. Not sure of the Triangles though. Some of it could be Ft Payne.

Hey, thats some nice stuff for forty bucks. I have a black knife and celt, but they are not as glossy. I'll probably send them to you before its over. Keith-----gone camping at the site.

Nice buy Steve. I like Novaculite, comes in some pretty colours. I always like to see pinks & reds.
Thanks for sharin' with us..

Molly.

Nice stuff and rare for a flea mkt. Ross County has a lot of exotic material from around the country but most was not used for utilitarian tools, but you know that! Thanks!

Zaleski flint takes flaking well I 've seen lots of points and tools made from zaleski ( I have several sites around vinton county) that have very nice flaking . I don't buy points. :read2:

I used to not buy points or any artifacts for that matter, but with the advent of no till farming and the sudden influx of tons of hunters it is getting to the point that finding nice pieces is getting rarer and rarer. I still love to hunt and would much rather find them than buy them, but when I can get a great deal on some no brainer good pieces and I have the extra cash I jump on them before someone else does.

I wish that you would have taken a picture of the 10,000 dollar piece. Would have looked good on the board ! I know how much you love to hassle those people. Might have to start bringing the camera for the "instu" picture of them :laughing7: Great tray by the way. I will have to stop by and see it.
