Well I have been sick this week but felt pretty good today. It was sunny and warm so I thought a good walk would do me some good. 5 hours lol. But it was nice with a breeze and I always enjoy the quiet. Saw some rabbits and a couple of deer no skunks thank god. I found some nice scrapers, thought I found a point but I believe it is a scraper tool. I found tons of flakes and HBers. Here they are. Thanks, rock

I agree! Rock, your finds are improving big time. Looks like your new spot is going to pan out for you.

I think it is a turtle I have 2 of them now from that area. I called the farmer cause my other spots are just so far away from me. There is still many places that he doesnt plant that I can hunt on. I went to a part that I havent visited. I have one that I thought was a point and will show it. I am thinking it might be a tool by the back of it. It has a flake removed like as to haft it. I dont find many like this one and it might be a early piece. Let me know what yall think on it. Might be a point reworked also I am not sure. Thanks, rock

So what period did they use this type of scraper in? Or can you actually say on tools. This one has a tiny flake removed as a shaft scraper tool on the side of it. I do find many like it with that cutting edge added to them. The oldest point so far from the area is almost 4000 B.P. so far. And I can find no signs of pottery at all.

gotta love turtle back scrapers :icon_thumright:

Can you shoot one of the black piece in your hand that may be the turtle back? It is was used in all time periods is my guess. Often flakes were utilized because they were convenient and sharp and in a few seconds they could put an edge on it if needed use it and throw it away. A lot of older sites did not have pottery here but it is more common near water and places of long habitation. I think some places were transitional as you will only find one culture but a really good spot was recognized and used for all time. Most times we put a city on those spots. Like the city near me.... Chattanooga. That is a cherokee or creek word. I used to have one field and all the artifacts were of a poor material roughly knapped and twisted but truck loads came from that one field. A mile away on an earlier site they were making some nice looking things. Go figure. Sorry to rant.

Rock! That piece with the large flake looks reworked into a hafted scraper. What's so cool about it is the large "flake" is actually a large impact fracture. The pics are hard to go on, but if it is reworked, this one let's us see it's first life, it's death, and rebirth. Cool!

ok here are 3 I have found in that area. Back and then front and the one back is from the black one on this thread. It looks like a bulb of percussion flake on the reverse. I might be wrong though.

I am seeing secondary flaking on the edges of black one. They did not do that stuff just for fun. Its a tool in my opinion and not just a reduction flake.

Yeah I see it now, thanks Tnm for the ID on it.

Nice flint finds, rock. Glad you were well enough to get out!
Nick

Thanks Nick, That one in the middle is some of the best looking flint I have ever found with that yellow in it. I thought this was going to be a Woodland site by a couple of points I found there. But now I think it is closer to a late archaic site and maybe the Woodland were close but didnt stay long. I am finding so many different types of scrapers and tools it is just crazy. I still have to get closer to the large creek as I work my way to that area. I always start at the highest part and then work my way down to the low spots. These came from the middle levels. Thanks, rock
