Took these pics today. Known in the neighborhood as the "flower guy". Guess it shows.

Azalea hedge, 4', 'Purple Splendor'. People walking on sidewalk pick this all the time. Contains urusiol, active compound in poison oak/ivy/sumac.<G> You get what you pay for. (hehehe)
Rhododendron 'Electra's Son'. When backlit by evening sun, turns electric blue. Gorgeous.
Nice orange poppy, pretty well picked daily by people walking on the sidewalk. Seed from this is what you eat on rolls or bagels.

Your Azalea hedge is beautiful, I never saw them as a hedge before just single bushes. I have two Rhododendron bushes the same color...blooms are beginning to fall off now. Thank you for sharing.

Richard: Grew the hedge from cuttings, rooting them at my parents' rhododendron/azalea nursery 25 years ago. Each began as a 3-4" cutting. The entire hedge has 15 'Purple Splendor' double azalea plants at 4' spacings. There is a white azalea 'Everest' at one end, a dwarf white rhododendron (I've forgotten the name) near the center, and a nearly dead pink rhododendron 'Pioneer' at the far end. 'Pioneer' rarely lasts 20 years, so it has actually done pretty good.

Something from my parents that keeps them close. A little ostentatious when in bloom. But when they bloom I invariably get offers to buy the place, based on the landscaping.

That shows patience using azaleas for a hedge. My wife used gardenia and even they are taking their time. Nice pic.

To GibH: not as long as you think. Took 3 years until I had to start trimming it; only 5 years to fill in completely, but took quite a while to get taller. I think I liked it better when it was 2.5-3'.

To MiniMe: probably get called other names too.<G> FunGuy comes to mind.

Below are some more of today's photos.

Rhododendron 'Cynthia'. This 15' tree is now 50+ years old.

Deciduous azalea (forgotten the variety). Has an aroma like cotton candy. Hummingbirds love it!

Corydalis lutea: contributed by a friendly flyby, probably a bird of some kind. Took awhile for it to get established, but it reseeds readily here, and now is becoming a little bit of a pest. Sometimes see daring hummingbirds feeding on it as well.
