Flying Eagle Cent, 1820s Eagle belt plate [partial],& another half penny

They have used some heavy equipment [scrapers and bulldozers] to ready a field for development.
The site is where a farmstead was in 1871.
I hunted the ground that was left and the dirt that was dragged away.
I found these and hope to find more when I go back.

We find those half Pennies occasionally in WI, only they say 'Bank of Northern Canada' instead of 'Montreal' and most are badly corroded.
Nice job on the eagle. That is on tough type to dig.

Merf,

Those are some GREAT finds! The odd thing about that plate is that it doesn't appear to be plough damage. The plate appears to be cut--almost as if someone cut it much later to turn their great grandfather's militia plate into a pair of aviator wings for current service.



I have heard of eagles cut from plates before, but in this case it only appears to have been the wings and shield. It may be that you will find the bottom half of the plate in your next search.

I went back today and found another piece of it.
It was 95 degrees, muddy, and the bugs were eating me alive so I did not stay long.
Here is a pic. I tumbled the pieces so they look a little better.

Merf--the great thing is that this means that the rest of the buckle IS there! You MUST find it if possible.

What I hadn't considered when I posted before, was that these were the natural stress points in the buckle (where the metal was folded when it was stamped when made). It just looked strange for a second. But the rest of that plate is there in that field.

Was the other piece close to where you found the first one?

Just wanted to give you a bit of background info on your Canadian coin find.

The BANK OF MONTREAL circulated sous or halfpennies with a bouquet of heraldic flowers on one side and the value in French on the other. These sous were immediately popular and the government allowed the bank to supply Lower Canada with copper; however, the sous were very soon imitated anonymously. The imitations were accepted because there was a dearth of small change with which to conduct business; but they became too numerous and, once again, the banks had to refuse them, except by weight.

To replace them, the government authorized 4 banks, the Bank of Montreal, the Quebec Bank, the City Bank and La Banque du Peuple, to issue copper pennies and halfpennies with the arms of Montréal on one side and a standing habitant on the other. These coins arrived in Canada just as the Rebellion of 1837 began and were issued in 1838.
There were 480,000 of these minted in 1842.
