I hunted rather thoroughly the immediate area where I found the 1796 Large Cent on Monday and could only recover a nice late 1700's button with nice geometric circles on it and a small rosette. But, while I was there I got the pleasure of viewing and sort of photographing two Scarlet Tanagers, a brilliant colored male and dull colored female, one pic included when he was sitting high above me in the trees.

Anyway, I decided to do some exploring in the area and started walking further east following the faint remains of an old dirt road, long forgotton about. LOL< I got a beautiful signal in the middle of nowhere and unfortunately it was a clad quarter, grrrrrrrrrr, not what you expect to find in an area like that.

As I walked about a mile, I found no signs of any new places to hunt, so I turned around and as I got back within a block of the sawmill, I started to get a lot of iron hits and I looked around and saw a 5 foot deep small hole in the ground with a very big pine tree growing out of the center of it! I was not quite sure at first that it was a homestead site ,but I immediately dug a button, then about 4 pieces of harmonica. So, now I decided to take my time at this spot and delay leaving for a bit. Glad I did, even though I got no old coins today, I think when I unearthed the Navy Anchor brass piece, a nice smile appeared. I never saw anything similar so finding a military related relic is always a thrill.

So the highlight of the hunt today was finding the navy anchor thing. Sure am looking for idea of what it was nailed to, and possible a date era?

As I got back to my truck , I saw a hen turkey fly over it. Kind of neat, then I heard a cluck, cluck, cluck type of sound. I looked around and thought perhaps it was a hunter using a call for turkey, since the season is in right now in Jersey, but no, it was the real deal. Near the top of a big Cedar tree was a big ole Tom Turkey, Cluckin away.

While driving home saw quite a few hen turkeys, very active right now, just before nesting season I guess. Overall, a very enjoyable morning, seeing wildlife (no snakes this time) and getting a few relics.

Great place and finds! Looks like you have a beautiful day with Mother Nature and found some great treasure too!
Congrats! and thanks for sharing the pics

I just told "riverpie" today about a sawmill that was in existence in the early 1800's. After reading this, I'm ready to tackle that site!

Decent shots of the tanager, turkey, and unfurling lady's slipper. It's easy to imagine oneself being in the woods with all my equipment - camera, MD, pinpointer..ouch! I'm getting sore from carrying all this stuff around!

Nice to see your finds HH

Beautiful pics, I love the red bird. I have a pair of woodpeckers that hang out in my front yard digging for worms. I hear them in the tree outside my bedroom window every morning. Who needs a rooster wake up call when ya got woodpeckers ;D ;D

Nice post Don, that anchor plate is awesome! HH, Mike

The photos in this post were taken with my brand new Canon S3 IS So far I am thrilled about how good of a camera it is, especially since it not only has a nice Macro, but a Super Macro of 0" distance! The bird photo was taken in the 12x Optical zoom mode and the IS stands for Image Stablilaztion which is critical for still photo's in such a high optical zoon. In other words, I love this camera. :) (around 300 bucks)
