Hi all, the ground finally thawed out near St. Louis, so I went to a park to ring hunt. After digging up lots of junk and pulltabs, I started to get really tired and wondered if hunting for a gold ring was really worth the trouble. I know to find a gold ring the discrimination has to be low, so I left my unit on one of the lowest settings and headed for a sand pit underneath some swings.

I pulled this gorgeous ring out of the sand after searching the pit 10 to 15 minutes.

This ring looks silver, but my detector says it's not. It behaves exactly like a gold ring. I can't find one letter or writing inside the band. It is 3/8" thick and has 12 stones..6 green and 6 red. The stones just gleam.

My question: Do all gold rings have to be inscribed to be gold? I'm also thinking there's a possibility it's antique (because of the style) and I don't think very old rings were inscribed.

If anyone can lend some info about this kind of ring I would appreciate your input..when I brought the ring home I put it on the floor next to my 14K gold wedding band and it my detector behaved exactly the same way for both rings.

Thanks,
Nat

I just got a fake ring the other day that was hitting a solid 19-21 VDI. I pulled it out of the ground and I saw a stamp on the inside of the band...Woohoo! Then I got it home only to find the stamp said Taiwan.....Dangit! :'(

I have also found fake kids rings that sound good (gold) but are actually plated or made of some other material. I am no ring expert but it looks like a costume ring to me. It is a nice find though... ;D ;D

Thanks..I like it too! I was thinking it wasn't a kid's ring because it's 3/4" wide, huge compared to other child rings I've pulled up.

It is a nice looking ring but my guess would be costume jewelry. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya and think gold.

Yeah, I also agree with you on the kids part....Thats why I removed it from my post. After looking at the ring, its size was larger then any other tots ring I have found ;D

I have yet to find a real ring LOL I did find a sterling kids band once...It wouldn't even fit on my pinky LOL.

How is the weight? Did you polish any part of it to see the true color? A last-ditch method is to ascertain the volume of the ring (by submersing it in a measured container) and the weight, then dividing the weight by the volume to get the density which you can then compare to the density of various metals. This is kind of difficult with small items. You can also use electronic or chemical tests that are available. Remember that VDI's are largely determined by size. With rings, I have found that the VDI is proportional to the narrowest part of the ring. In this case, even though the ring is wide, it is only connected by three narrow connections; the rims and the vine. So, this ring would give a lower VDI then it would if it was solid.

Nice ring, either way!

If the color on the ring is correct on my screen, that's definitely not gold. Looks more like copper base metal with silver eletroplate. And rings don't have to be marked gold, some have been resized and that removed the mark or they where homemade.

It almost looks like pewter to me.

It's a pretty ring, whatever its made of. ;)

Good info TBGO, I'll have to go with Ant on this one..further inspection with reading glasses AND magnifyer show some kind of plating over a hint of copper color. Had me fooled for a minute..I'll find that gold one eventually.

Thanks all,
Nat

I've seen a lot of rings and this one is not gold, yellow or white. Not all gold is marked. Even some of the marked ones are fake too. The only sure way to see if it is gold is to make a mark on a "knife polishing stone" and draw a line thru it with Nitric acid to see if it dissolves.

Just from the looks on my screen it might me stamped metal and the stones are plastic or glass. But I hope I am wrong.

When I started in the water I found a beaut of a ring. After my eyes got back to normal size I could read the Avon inside.

It's still a very nice ring and rare that you were able to find it.

Nice ring

Reminds me of the Style or Sterling Rings I'v Found.

Minus the Flowers & stones though.

Recheck for the word

STERLING or 925 in there somewhere.

looks like water tarnished silver to me

Hey there, I found an old ring that sort of looks like the same color as yours. Mine seems to be made out of pot metal I guess anyway. Here's a pic to compare.

It's just my opinion Nate...but a ring doesn't have to be gold or silver to be treasure! I love that ring....it's very unique! You've got yourself quite a collection going! You'll have to post all of your jewelry finds together real soon. Congrats on yet another cool find!

HH,
Moon

Danglangley that's a neat looking old ring :o

Thanks Sandman for the added info :)

Jeff there's no markings anywhere, as said earlier I can see a hint of brown beneath the plating ???

And Moon, you have the right outlook on the hobby ;) I just wanted to know what I had because my detector responded to this one like a precious metal even though it wasn't. It kinda confused me. I get excited finding any ring, gold or no gold :) I will post all the rings together soon, I have about 40 of them so far.

One more thing, this place is great. I received a half dozen replies within one hour of posting my question. Awesome!

Thanks to everyone who replied, I appreciate your ideas/comments.
