Found this button in a private yard of an 1800's house, it was down about 8 inches and is a foreign Navy button. On the front it says on the top...."Vapores Correos" and along the bottom it says "Del Marques Campo" There is a back mark on it but can;t read it, have the button soaking so hopefully will be able to read the back mark clearer. Any ideas what Navy, what it says and how old?? Thanks.

Wes..the back is all corroded and I have it soaking now. I think you are right about it being Spanish ...I found this....Vapores Correos was a Spanish shipping company and Marques Campo was Marques de Campo built 1918 10th May 1924 wrecked near Casablanca on voyage Barcelona - Las Palmas. 2,252 tons.

Soaked the button for a while, and still can;t make out alot of the backmark, but can clearly read Barcelona, so I would say the button is definitely Spanish.

I agree with Matt...

I think it's a civilian varient of an early 1800s Spanish
Navy button... and while NOT British, possibly made by a British
Company. http://www.artifacts.org/Marked_Buttons.htm

Other notes:

Am I translating this correctly?

This text from this site:
http://www.triputrasme.es/trastras/histo/capitulos_flota_libro/Historia_cap/hf_presentacion.htm

SPANISH: "La Compañía Valenciana de Vapores Correos de África aportó 23.660.000 pesetas"

ENGLISH: "The Valencian Steam Company Post office of Africa contributed to 23.660.000 pesetas"

Jim...it very well could be a civilian button, possibly issued and manufactured after the ship sank?? It could also be a uniform button for the ship Marques de Campo, either worn by the merchantmen or others stationed or working aboard of her. It definitely is not British issue or British made, for the only part of the back mark I can read is "Barcelona" so I would say it was Spanish manufactured.
