I was just thinking how when I was younger my grandmother had this ceramic owl that was filled with coins. Back then I wasn't into coins obviously besides monetary value. I remember getting it and having all those coins. But it got me thinking, wonder how could I formally find people with large quantities of coins. I could buy them off them to search thru and then turn the rest in. Hopefully they would be unsearched coins as well.

Anyone ever thought of this?

I've also thought of this way to get coins in hand to search through with the small budget I have right now.
Have you taught him the value of the silver coinage? If I was in his position I would have jumped on this! :o

Oh absolutely, he understands and remembers this stuff like a sponge. But he doesn't really like the idea of having to work at anything. :-)

Sounds exactly like my son.......

of course if you do something like this there is always the possibility you will get another collectors/CHRers dump - but I guess that is always going to happen from time to time no matter how you search/hunt.

This is a really interesting idea, keep us posted on any successes or failures please! Hope Grandma brings in two rolls of silver quarters :icon_thumleft:

It "almost" sounds like a good idea, but would you want someone coming to your house and digging in your piggy bank? Also think of all the hassle, for both parties. The seller has to decide when they can meet with you, you have to decide when you can come, and then someone decides they need to cancel. I would Never trust a stranger to come to my house and take my coins, maybe never seeing them again. A lot of people dont know the value of coins, but that is the problem. If you start pulling out the good coins on the spot, they will think you are pulling a fast one on them, and you are in a way.
Not even sure of the legality of this kind of business. You would probably have to have some Official type of ID also, maybe a permit. Sounds like a good way to big problems.

It does sound weird, but maybe I can turn the kid factor on

Right now I'd have to figure how to do it without a sorter. . .

. . . I'm trying to figure a craigslist ad now, but it's difficult

>>>>FREE<<<< Cash for Coin Service - Like Coinstar, but without the FEES!!!!!!!!!!!!

I search circulated coins for errors and key dates. It is a time-consuming, tedious hobby requiring a lot of knowledge about coins. It is not for everyone, but I enjoy it.

As a way to gather coins for my hobby, I will pick up your loose change and pay you cash for it.

If your coin is sorted and pre-counted (rolled preferred) I will pay you cash on the spot for it.

If it needs to be sorted and counted, I will do that and pay you within 3 days. For this method, I will provide you with the transaction slip from my bank that shows the total.

In my area, this would be a financial disaster. Coin collectors would seek me out to dump coin. Then, just like the banks, I would be stuck with the job of finding someone to take the stuff without charging me--which would very shortly be impossible.

There's GOT to be a better way.

Keep on Rollin' !

So far no answers. I got my flag on the first ad. Reworded it a couple times to let it go thru again because I tried to just repost it under the right area. No answers so I won't worry about it now. It was worth the try. I'll just stick to my looking at my change from the stores for now.

You could volunteer to "cash-out" the tip jar or collection jar on the counter of the places you go. Tell them you need coins, can't get what you need from the banks, etc. It would really help you out if you could replace the coins in the jar with cash. I've seen silver dimes in those jars before. Once I asked for "that dime right there" and got it. Once, the guy says "the silver one? No, I keep them."

Or, tell the cashier that if they let you look through the jar and if you find anything worth more than face value, you will replace anything you find with what you think it is worth. Make sure you compensate the tip jar and yourself equally fairly and everybody wins.

Either of these would only work during a very slow period where you wouldn't disrupt the business by standing at the counter for 30min clanging coins around.

I think around here, people wouldn't go for that. If any even have tips. There are several DD that don't let them have a tip jar. Plus being in the city, someone would think I'm up to no good or be like you ain't touching my tips. I know I'd feel very uneasy like what if they say ok then accuse me of stealing their tips.
