Fossils and metals?

I found a segmented piece that looks somewhat like a fish back bone without ribs, except it looks more like something metallic with white rock like substance around where the bones would be. Do metals commonly form in fossils? This was found in slate rock in a valley bottom.

No, metals are not found in fossils. Pyrite might be what you're seeing, but without a photo it's tough to say.
