Sent the pics and info to an antique costume jewelry collector to see if she could give me any information on it and this is what she had to say:
The pictures sure made a difference!
The jewelry you found is older, probably late Victorian or early
Edwardian, a necklace. I can't tell where the charms would be attached,
but they probably came originally in the necklace. The delicacy of the
necklace style and the fact that there are tennis rackets tells me circa
1890-1920. While they did have charm-type necklaces, I did not notice
any detail on the charms that suggest they hung. But another prevalent
style was "dog collar" necklaces, which were chokers worn high on the
neck. The pieces look like they may have been soldered onto the necklace
frames. A ribbon could have been run through the necklace to fasten to
the back of the neck to tie it, or to fasten with an additional "beauty
pin."
Please understand I'm not familiar with jewelry earlier than about 1860.
I'm trying to fit in the pieces with the styles I do know. The piece
could be much earlier.
Silver and other white metals were popular in jewelry then, but it could
have once been plated with brass underneath, or an alloy. It's in
interesting old find.
Well there you have it...not a definate date but gets me into the 1800's which I thought it was anyway since I found 3 coins from the 1800's ther and various lantern wicks and other artifacts. Wish I knew the manufacturer of it to get more history of it but oh well..beggars can't be choosers!!
