Found this and think it is a bracelet. I put it around my wrist and it seems like the correct length for one. Found the full bracelet first then kept pulling the tennis racket looking things and the 2 geisha women out of the same hole. I figure they were attached somehow in the middle of the square openings on the bracelet.

Any ideas on possible date of this and is it truly a bracelet?

Thanks

I don't know for sure but it looks more like a necklace to me. Sometimes you will see them in old movies (or newer movies about older times), worn more like a choker? Just a thought. Nice finds either way!

My first thought was, What would Geisha Girls and Tennis Rackets have in common? That they woud hang from the same piece of jewelry. Very nice find tho. I think most ladies bracelets have an average length of 7 to 71/2"'s. So I am going with the choker necklace guess.....but still wondering if they were all on that same piece.

digdug_rita,

I could not make the connection either but they all came out of the same hole and are made of the same metal. I pulled the bracelet/choker out first and scanned the hole again and got more signals and that is when the pinpointer started helping me find these peices. Some where still in hole and some were in the dirt pile I had outside the hole. Also when I cleaned it up, there was one end section of the peice that was bent in half and when I unbent it carefully, there was a tennis racket thing inside that.

Very strange but very interesting

Sent the pics and info to an antique costume jewelry collector to see if she could give me any information on it and this is what she had to say:

The pictures sure made a difference!

The jewelry you found is older, probably late Victorian or early
Edwardian, a necklace. I can't tell where the charms would be attached,
but they probably came originally in the necklace. The delicacy of the
necklace style and the fact that there are tennis rackets tells me circa
1890-1920. While they did have charm-type necklaces, I did not notice
any detail on the charms that suggest they hung. But another prevalent
style was "dog collar" necklaces, which were chokers worn high on the
neck. The pieces look like they may have been soldered onto the necklace
frames. A ribbon could have been run through the necklace to fasten to
the back of the neck to tie it, or to fasten with an additional "beauty
pin."

Please understand I'm not familiar with jewelry earlier than about 1860.
I'm trying to fit in the pieces with the styles I do know. The piece
could be much earlier.

Silver and other white metals were popular in jewelry then, but it could
have once been plated with brass underneath, or an alloy. It's in
interesting old find.

Well there you have it...not a definate date but gets me into the 1800's which I thought it was anyway since I found 3 coins from the 1800's ther and various lantern wicks and other artifacts. Wish I knew the manufacturer of it to get more history of it but oh well..beggars can't be choosers!!

Great find, Funk! I liked the part about a ribbon running through it. I can picture that. Mount it with the ribbon through it and display it. Pretty... -Noodle

I wish I knew where the pieces went and I would solder them back on for display. Have to see how some ladies wore this kind of necklace with a ribbon. Maybe I will ask the lady who gave me that bit of info.

Sometimes I do see a flicker of light inside that pumpkin-head. Tennis rackets and geisha's dont mix. Very cheap costume jewelry from the 1920'-30's Someone just lost a handful of random jewelry items.. might even be more around the general area..
