I think I've found my first King George III copper! It was only about 5 inches down. At first I thought it was another toasted LC that seemed very thin. I was disappointed because I figured I wouldn't get any detail off of it. But I managed to clean it up a bit and got some decent detail on the bust side.

I may be wrong on the ID, but I think it's a KG III. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The date side is toasted, so I probably won't be able to get an exact date off of it. If someone could narrow the date down a bit for me I would really appreciate it. I'm definitely not an expert on these guys!

I also got another toasted IH! The other day, I got a LC and an IH and now today I find a KGIII and an IH! Weird! Not sure of the date, so I've got it soaking in mineral oil. Hopefully, it won't be another no date IH!

Here's a few pics:

Possibly a George II or George III British farthing or halfpenny...? The halfpenny should weigh 9.5 grams and have a 29 mm diameter.

I am envious of you guys and all those LCs and King Georgies, even if they are toasted, they are would be a amazing find for my area... congrats my friend on the great find

I don't have a very good scale, but it measures 1.125 inches, which works out to 28.575 mm. That should make it a halfpenny, correct?

Thank you! I'm definitely not going to gripe about the condition of this KG copper! I'm thrilled to finally find any colonial copper coin.

I would take one of those in any condition!

The 2014 Redbook gives 3 possibilities---Either it's a 1749 George II halfpenny; A 1770-1775 George III halfpenny; or a 1770-1775 British imitation halfpenny. Notice that the curvature of the shoulder armour carries over the shoulder of the British halfpennies whereas the shoulder of the Georgivs made in America only looks to go 3/4 of the way over the shoulder. It's too bad the reverse is toast. Mind you this is only my opinion from what I can see in your pictures and should only be used as a "guiding opinion". The guys who know what they are looking at the instance they see it are the ones to place stock in their views. I have been out of the coin "thing" for more than 20 years so my eyes are out of practice and my brain doesn't have that instant recognition it used to have.

It could very well be a counterfeit that was made back then. I will attempt to clean up the reverse tomorrow to try and get a date. Too tired tonight!

P.S. The toasted IH is a 1906. Nothing special, but at least I got a date off of it.

Well done on digging something that I have never dug one of! Great find, and congratulations. Probably not going to get much better than that without microcrystalline wax.

Best Wishes,

Buck

nice saves Tim.

KG III halfpenny for sure. Chances are good the date is 1775. Possibly contemporary counterfeit. Too toasted to tell for sure. Either way, nice find!
