Found A Nice Old Homestead Sunday. I Hope I Didn't Dig Up A Childs Grave?
Hey everyone,
I've been seeing alot of great finds on here lately by everyone. Man it is the season. It's a rarity that I take a Saturday off from detecting but I did to go fishing opening day. Had a good time caught some fish and taught my boys how to fish.
However, I couldn't wait to get back home for Sunday and get out for a few hrs. I made 2 stops that day. One to check where I thought was a structure. It was there but it was newer cinder blocks and close to the rd so I went onto plan b.
Head back to a area where I've been hunting for old homesteads. I finished up on the last sight and on my way out of the woods that day I knew there was another foundation close to the rd.
I spotted a single dafodil at the edge of the woods and said to my brother I bet that is where that home stood. We didn't have time to check but Sunday I did have time. Well me and my boys got out of the car walked right into the edge of the woods and there it was.
Nice old stacked stone foundation. I was very optomistic about the site though. Power lines every where. I said to myself ok I can readjust to this. I did but it was near hell. Could only hold a pre amp of 1 and a sense of 55.
I couldn't get deeper than 4 or 5 inches depth at the site. The site also had a small fire trail cut right next to it with power lines running through the ground about 15 ft to the left of the site.
I'll tell you what guys. It was the worst site I ever hunted ever. I was able to hunt it the best I could under the conditions with decent results. I know there is more here. I only spent 2 hrs on the site hunting it.
Picking up alot of surface to 4 inch finds. I decided to take my son's ace 250 and see what I could do with it. The ace struggled but was fairly calm. I couldn't get great depth with it either but it did pull a few indians and a few other items.
The one item it did pull up close to the foundation was a small cross. And also not far from it some small fragments of the same alloy the cross it made of. I really hope I wasn't ontop of a small grave or a burial site.
They would make the homestead a resting place for people who died. I've seen stone's in front of old cabin sites. I don't think anyone has been burried 4 inches down. No bones where found it just got me thinking.
The only other time I have dug crosses like this was at or near a cemetery. Hopefully you guys can shed some light on what you think about it. Do I need to say a prayer when I go back.
Besides that topic. A few nice items where found. Got 4 indians 1865 1884 1899 1907. Got some wheats a war nickle and a Nice array of relics. Would like some opinions on the name plates found.
Look to be RailRoad items. They were all folded up and nearly destroyed when found. I bent them back out. For some reason seems they wanted them destroyed. Does anyone know what they are.
Thanks everyone for you ideas and help.
