Found a strange rock with consistent design, shaft in other side

I found this looking in a dried creek bed. No idea what it is. I've found several large rocks with holes drilled in them, always figured some people must have used the site. Didn't think it was Indians. Once I found this, I just had to try asking around, since I have no idea even where else to start looking. I'm wondering if the rod through the back is some petrified wood, I really don't know. I've never found an Indian artifact, just figured it was worth a shot to ask.

Interesting. The shaft in the back, it's a solid piece wedged all the way through it, definitely not part of the original stone. Any tips on what to do next? I don't know much about fossils either. There is a lot of limestone in the area.

EDIT --- Could it be coral?

Member Harry Pristis has previously identified several of these in the Fossil Forum as "It is from an Upper Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian?) lycopod, a vascular, tree-like plant. Compare with Lepidodendron."

Grim is correct. It was a type of tree during the Pennsylvania period. I have some from around old coal mines. They are really cool. That was a good I.D.
