It looks a lot like fossilized palm wood.

It is from an Upper Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian?) lycopod, a vascular, tree-like plant. Compare with Lepidodendron.

I still kinda think it looks like a chunk of cactus- a friend had a piece that looked just like that. And this is what I found for Lepidodendron- which has a different dimple patter, from my perspective. I definitely could be wrong. JMHO... Yakker

My mother has a rain stick made out of some kinda wood looks just like that... the pattern and shape to it...

I've seen rain sticks made from ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) skeletons.
