I am in one of those throw it out and let God figure it out later phases. This is the worst case since forever. 1/3 of my rock collection gone....1/3 of my gemstone collection gone...1/2 of my clothes gone...Confederate buttons, gold coins, panning and slucing gold finds, all the silver, jewlery, and that was just in the last 10 days with more to come.
Today I went through three dresser drawers of everything. I have one drawer left with stuff in it. In the melee, I came across a letter addressed to my late uncle from the Department of the Navy. Uncle Ted was on the USS Helena (CL-50) in WWII. He was on it when it sank in Kula Gulf in 1943, but happily survived and he finally died in 2010, which for me was the year from hell.
I have seen the letter before, but it was just with a lot of other papers. Today I opened it and read it and I think my mouth is still hanging open in amazement.
It is dated 1946 and is a PERSONAL LETTER from the SECRETARY OF THE NAVY, James Forrestal!
He thanked my uncle for his service and was very, very detailed in the letter and cited all kinds of things.
The letter is hand signed.
James Forrestal was Secretary of the Navy, and later became the first Secretary of Defense for the United States of America.
He died in 1949. The USS Forrestal, the navy's first nuclear carrier was named after him.
Uncle Ted, you did good.
