These were both found on Lake Freeman drainings. The top was from 1993. The bottom one was found close to the Tippecanoe River where a low river terrace starts against a higher bank. Those kind of spots are always a good place to look.

Here's the only one I've ever found and it's missing it's head and also broke through the back side.

Hello there,
Nice relics. Those undrilled type?
I wondered if this was a birdstone?
What do you think? Anybody!

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce, is there any evidence of work on that piece? Do you see any peck marks or grind marks or nay signs of where they may have started to drill it? It hard to say for your picture, but it does the outline of a Birdstone.

Nice slate gentlemen. I have a lot of broken slate but, none that i would definitely say is a portion of a birdstone.

i tell ya, i learn so much on t-net. have never heard of birdstones. are they indian childrens toys, charms, such as medicine ?

I'm pretty sure they are more rare than clovis points! They would have two holes drilled at the base and were tied. Nobody really knows what they were used for. There are several different varieties the bust birdstone being the most odd. Some have pop eyes.

There's been lot of speculation as to what Birdstones were used for, but I believe the consensus is that they were used as Atl-Atl weights much the same as Bannerstones. I have always believed that they were a fetish stone of some type. I just can't see that much time and effort going into something as beautiful as some of these objects were just to used as a throwing weight. Just my opinion.

Here's a couple links about Birdstones you might find helpful.

i agree about the throwing wts and they are beautiful. maybe they were used to mark marriages . the indians i dont believe had diamonds of course.

Looks natural to me. At least you have your eye out for the shape and slate!
The big one I found couldn't have been noticed by the material since it was
covered by algae so much. Kinda looked like a chia pet! haha

please look under "B" for birdstone, and you'll see the birdstone i was lucky enough to find on march 21,2009. this is the only birdstone piece i have found in 20 years of looking. i also posted some in situs, and pictures of how i think birdstones may have been used-as hair ornaments. even professional archaeologists aren't sure as to their exact usage.

Those are way cool
I never even thought to look for that shape before
It makes me wonder if I ever walked past one without recognizing it
where do those type of bird stones come from and what kind of bird do they symbolize
Very nice!

Sorry larson, they're pretty much an Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana thing. I feel like they're bannerstones.
