At least once per year we try to make our way to Baja for a week or so. We once owned a home down here, but with the real estate bubble, we sold our home just in time. We'll own a place here again, but until then, we vacation here as often as we can. Peace and quiet. Ocean and desert. Great combination.

We arrived yesterday, settled into our little rented casita, had a couple of margaritas and I went to bed just after sunset. It had been a long day of travel with little sleep the previous day. We own our own business and it's always a hustle to get everything done before we bug out.

My wife has been ill (nothing serious, just a cold.) so in the middle of the night she awoke to take another dose of Nyquil. Usually, as we're leaving Baja we stop on the way to the airport and hand our accumulated Peso coins (change from our purchases during our stay) to some unsuspecting family we spot on the way. Last visit, for some reason, we didn't.

Last night, as my wife couldn't sleep, she stacked the coins according to denomination. 10 Peso coins, 5 Peso coins, 1 Peso coins, etc...

When I awoke this morning I noticed the stacks of coins but there was an oddball...

As soon as I picked it up I realized it was very different. We got it as change during our trip down here a year ago! Looked it up online this morning and was happy to see it's more than just change. Happier still that we didn't give it away.

La Filipina 001.webpLa Filipina 002.webp I'll check our change more carefully now, but still pass along my great fortune and hand some Mexican family our accumulated change as we leave!La Filipina 003.webp

Where do you stay at in baja.

that's a great idea for leftover money, wish you had told me years ago

We frequent a small town called Los Barriles. It's about an hour and 15 minutes north of the airport on the Sea of Cortez. Much quieter than Cabo.

I got the idea from a guy that's won a couple of Baja races. One trip down, (we drove) we stopped before crossing into MX and bought about $100 worth of American candy. He wouldn't tell me what he was up to until we got into this tiny town called Mulege. I tried to warn the other guys we were driving with that our trucks and trailers would be a challenge in the narrow streets. Anyway, we got into town and caused quite a traffic jam. Our rigs were pretty cumbersome.

To make it better, Jim started giving candy to the kids on the street that were gawking at the crazy Gringos. Soon the streets were lined with people old and young cheering us on as we made our way back to the highway. spreading gringo candy and Mexican smiles all the while.
