One side looks like a small bead of lead solder is on it and it has a notch cut into it maybe to slide a belt through it.
It looks like copper.
It is 2 5/8" x 2 7/8" . Nothing written on it.
Could this be old Indian jewelry ? Or maybe some kind of tag that had something glued on it at one time.

Could be a lid from an old tin can and someone tried to open it with a knife, which was a common way of doing it years ago.

It's copper not TIN.
Maybe a homemade bank with slot for coins.

I was thinking a vintage bicycle bell cover but I couldn't find any that matched, the slot would have been the trigger for the bell????
