Would you help me to identify any or all of the buttons found at the site of a former shoddy woolen mill? Would be much appreciated. I’m a newbie to this site. Here’s hoping the photo attaches. :-)

Most of those look like blazer buttons (modern). If the backs are rusty (iron) then they are definitely blazer buttons. Always fun to find buttons though :unhappysmiley:

Welcome to Tnet. You clearly have an interesting Island. Not many people know about the Shoddy process & I never realised it every got outside of Great Britain, as it started in Yorkshire. Nearly all my button from the 19th C to 1930s were dumped on the field because of either burning wool clothes or the by-product of the Shoddy Mills, ie. the Mungo.

Here is a little info for those that don't know:
What is Shoddy?

You might find other War related items other than buttons, specially if the Mill was operating after WWI & WWII. Like foriegn coins, badges, religious pendants etc...

Thanks. I wonder what the definition of “Blazer Button” is.

A Civilian Blazer, a little like some schools wear but for posh adults who visit places like the Golf Clubs..lol

Interesting! There could be some nice military buttons around that mill depending on how old it is. I have been hunting a 19th century paper mill and have found a lot of buttons around where the workers houses stood, including a number of one piece military buttons. They used rags to make paper back then. I haven't found the button "dump" yet and suspect it might be under a large landfill area.

I see early NY and NJ State Seal buttons in that group and a few that are not blazer buttons, like Federal Navy button - horizontal anchor. Livery button - Gibson Family Crest. Very nice haul there!

The bottom right looks like a United States Marine Corps button to me. The top left is a U.S. Air Force button. That button would not be older than 1947 I believe.

SHODDY OR NOT VERY NEAT BUTTONS YOU GOT THERE SUZABELLA, WELCOME TO TNET !!!!! VANZUTPHEN

Pictures of the backs would help date and ID the buttons. Post pictures of the fronts and them flip them over while keeping each one in the same position relative to the others.

Nice group of buttons

Nice collection of buttons congrats! Not many of us have our own little Island sites!

Agreed, bottom right is a Marine Corps button. If the buttons were orientated correctly and a pic of the backs included, a more specific ID might be possible.

That Marine Corps button is almost certainly CW or earlier and a very nice find! Welcome to the group . . .
