Thats pretty cool. Must have been a common latch but also an expensive one by all the detail work.
Thanks for looking.

Do you know what it went too?well almost the same :D Make sure you go back tomorrow like you said :-X Did you find it by a river or lake? I dont think they are very common acedigger... Has anyone else found any locks like this?

I like finding tokens just as much if not more than silver coins. They have more character in my opinion. Congratulations.

I found a very similar latch and soaked it in oil for months. It didn't clean up as well as those you've pictured.

Could you post us a pic. Halfdime , just to show the style? was it brass??

I found it at an old homestead. There isn't any river or lake nearby. It is just a big pasture. My grandmother remembers the house that was there and she said it was a little two room house and the people that lived there were pretty poor. She bought the place in the 1950's and the house still didn't have running water or an indoor bathroom.
Thats the reason I figured they were common. Hopefully someone on here knows more about this than me.

Where i found my lock ,turned out to be a very good place for me..I found alot of silver coins. Someone had filled a big wooden box full of stuff ..I took mine to a local lock collector ,and he told me it was from a 1800s icebox .. I guess it maybe true ..They could have put the whole icebox in the ground..Goodluck thats all the info i have..

cool finds !!!

mmmmmmm cake...... ;D :P :P :P :) :) :)

Thanks for the info. I will google this and see what I get. I am hoping that I will find more stuff today.

Well that didn't take long. I googled "vintage icebox hardware" and the first page I went to had them. The info you provided was correct.
It says these were from the Victorian era. You can purchase a new one for $23 so the real ones might be worth more.

I don't think it was brass; cast iron(?) maybe. Here's a picture.
