Hello all,
I am new to this sight and hoping I am doing this correctly.

I found this coin or token in an old desk I was cleaning out today. I don't think it could be worth much if it is real because it weighs next to nothing. it says California gold, 1 dollar on the back and 1872 on the front. It must have been made into a charm I'm guessing with that loop attached to it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

That's a California fractional gold coin pendent, which is less suprising than it sounds given that many of these fractional coins were made by jewelers of the time meeting the local need for coinage in amounts less than $2.50. Needless to say the official US Mint had a slight problem with them doing so. Not really sure what it's worth, but the coins themselves ran anywhere from 14 to 22 carat.

Here's a link with some more detailed information on these fractional denomination coins...

Good save in any case, an unusual find.
