Hey all.

I was headed home from work today when I seen a garage sale just off the main road. I noticed a really cool looking old chest outside. Asked the guy what he wanted for it and I ended up with it for $20.00 It is in pretty good shape I assume. The lock was attached but I broke it so I could open it up. Had no key.. Anyway Does anyone have any idea on the age of this thing and what it may be worth? It is a very large trunk. Measures 26 inches wide X 38 Inches tall X 22 Inches thick

Alo came witha wooden drawer with 2 compartments. forgot to picture that.

$20 bucks for Long John Silver's chest? Yeah, you gotta deal! I love those old chests. Nice find.:headbang:

Hard to say. Those old chest can be pretty expensive, but yours looks to be in rough shape and the lock is now broken. $20 is probably fair.

IMHO I believe that to be a "darn good deal". If you are a fixer-upper as I am, I would of bought it in a heart beat. I'm looking at it to be restored and used as a coffee table, plus an area to store other items (afghans, throws). I love the outside details.

Nice idea a coffee table HH I think you got a good deal show us it restored later on

A little rough but worth the 20 dollars. Most are missing the wooden drawer so that is good. Take some time and clean it up and it should look nice. I pick them up when I can, I don't restore them but I normally put in new material on the inside, remove rust and paint the hardware on the outside. Where the missing material is missing on the outside you can lightly sand it down and put one of those travel stickers over it.

neat steamer trunk

I just bought a guide on trunks at an estate sale I went to. This post gave me a chance to use it.
Here's what it says:

Yours is the one in the left middle of the last pic.
Both the top pics came out looking like the trunk is not square, but the pics are actually square. Kinda strange why my camera did that??

Nice. I have restored several and have one now I am going to re-do. Will look good.

Hey, I'd like to see some pictures of the restores if anyone cares to post. I'm curious what it would take. My parents used to have one of those things for decades for storage.

It's late 1800's(1870-1900), very popular and I sold many in our antique store. Easily worth $200-$250. Clean it up, and use it to store things. Here in Texas, people love to have them in their homes. Broken lock means nothing. If you wish, that can be fixed and keys can be found. But it was a steal at $20. Antique stores across the south have trouble keeping them in stock. A lot of homes use them for blanket boxes at the foot of the bed. And yours appears to be in good shape. Nice find...
