Found this on 1778 battlefield in PA and can't ID!

Hey everyone. I found this on a 1778 battlefield in PA metal detecting. Anyone know what it may be? I didn't want to toss it without ID'ing it. This field produces a lot of things from that time period. Also used to be an old tavern back in the day. Thanks everyone!

it is not leather. It is an additional piece of metal that is attached by that small nub you can see on the top. thanks!
