not sure about any gold in my area.. Im located in Rockaway Twp NJ(on the Dover/Rockaway line). Trust me I am keeping my eyes wide open for that first Gold find I'm finding a lot of quarts type stones in my yard. I'm not an expert in geological pinning but definitely seeing lots of quartz as I mentioned, some soapstone(mixed green and pinks ),tons of pyrite(which at first had me thinking I was a millionaire...big letdown there). I know that some stones are indicative of a gold line, what should I be looking for? and what is the best way to go about crushing out a stone for panning?

i know of no gold occurences in nj ,but the franklin area is know to produce facet quality curundum ruby ,blue and pink.but always keep an open mind to the possibility of gold ,as the apalachian gold belt xtends through jersy , so it is possible.you have said that you have pyrite ,some appalachian gold is assoc . with pyrite and slate ,i do know that there was world class quality slate quarrys in jersy.happyhunting

Kristen s I saw a great you tube video of a guy crushing quartz and panning it, perhaps do a search there. It was so cool to then watch him pan it and find gold. Never thought it was possible. Learn something new every day!

This is part of a Quartz mass of vug.. note the smokey quartz and clear to white quartz.. however the "golden color" your seeing is that of rust or common mineral stainings.. Thou without get extremely close to see if it actually has rutile within the quartz.. one can never tell.

Loco, thanks! And to the rest of you as well. I definitely am able to differentiate the rust stains from any flaking of say pyrite or the like, but it is tricky at times to separate the layers of rock and stones. It is all a learning experience for sure... Thanks for the resources and back up you guys, it is truly appreciated!
