Was down on the coast for vacation and found these WW2 MK 23 practice bombs. The piece with the oyster shells is the back half of another one. The MK 23 was used in low level and dive bombing practice during WW2.
The MK-23 has an overall length of 8.25" and is made of cast iron. The diameter at its largest point is 2.18". The fins are 2.5" in length. The weight, when empty, but with firing pin was 2 lbs-14 oz. while when armed was approximately 3 lbs-0 oz.

i removed the encrustations using a small thin screwdriver. Once you get under the crust, it breaks away nicely exposing the metal underneath. Right now I am soaking them in fresh water and changing out the water every day to remove the salt. The plan is to do a final clean up with the dremel, then treat with an aerosol rust converter.
